The Sikh Education School mission is to provide our children with a foundation in Gurmukhi, Sikh History, Kirtan, and Gurmat. Parents, students, teachers, and the Gurdwara management all work together to achieve it.
The teachers strive to enable students to learn reading, writing, and speaking in the Punjabi language, develop awareness of our rich cultural heritage, and instill pride in their Sikh identity. Our ultimate goal is to enable students to read the Sikh scriptures, in particular Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
Currently, we have four learner groups based on students’ age and skill. Each level focuses on a number of concepts and skills to be mastered by each student. The youngest group is of children 3 to 5 year old; the oldest group is of high school students; and the other two lie in the middle.
Upon graduation from the Sikh Education School, the students will be able to:
- Demonstrate the knowledge of Sikh way of life.
- Read Punjabi and Gurbani fluently.
- Write Punjabi with ease.
- Speak Punjabi in social settings.
Classes mirror the regular school year and are held on Sundays from 9:30 AM to 11 AM. Registration is required, and students are expected to attend all classes on time. Regular meetings are held by teachers to evaluate the progress of the children; the class and homework are evaluated accordingly. Exams are given at the discretion of teachers. Parents are kept abreast of the students’ progress throughout the year.
Children are encouraged to participate in Kirtan after their class; an hour is dedicated to the children’s kirtan every Sunday from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. The Gurdwara Gyani ji, Bhai Satnam Singh, is always available during this time to assist them with their kirtan. Several Gurpurabs are celebrated during the school year in which children take the lead. We also organize various competitions during the year, such as the Speech Symposium, Gurbani Recitation, Gurmat Camp, and others; children participate in all the events every year, which helps build their self-confidence and commitment to the Sikh culture.
We encourage parents to enroll their children in the Sikh Education School. Please know that by working together we can achieve our common objectives, and the entire community will reap the benefits of this endeavor.
